Yahoo is a good search engine but still has clutter.

Whenever you think about good web sites, you probably think about a positive experience you had. I guess that most people prefer a clean web site without a lot of other garbage piled on. That's where I think the portal idea is a bad one. It seems that some people think that the more you have on the page, the more likely you are to click on something. I think that's true with Yahoo and MSN. As I've stated before, these companies could do well to eliminate some of the clutter that they have. Frankly, I don't need to see a more news items about Paris Hilton. Now I know that most sites don't do that, but why do really solid search engines even bother with this kind of clutter?

You talk about Web marketing, don't these search engines have a vested interest in making their interface cleaner? I would guess if they had it more organized and gave people the choice of whether they wanted to see any information about Paris Hilton, that they might be more competitive with the likes of Google. Google still is on top because they know who they are.
