Many companies like blogs, but don't like what employees say.

I get a kick out of companies that say that they like new technology and encourage things like blogging. I've linked to an article that explains in detail some of the things that have happened to people who have been blogging in the corporate atmosphere. Against free speech is okay as long as you temper it with helpful information and not destructive information about the company you work for. It would only make sense, most likely the company you work for is how you make a living, so why would you want to destroy the verbally? On the other hand, if your company that believes in this, why would you be limiting people saying things that need to be said? It's a balance like anything in life.

What does it have to do with Web marketing? A blog can be a good tool to communicate to the outside world the humanness of your company. So that's good from a marketing standpoint. Just be careful at what's being said is helpful to a good online marketing campaign.
