E-commerce getting more competitive?
According to Web Host Industry News Review, e-commerce is getting more competitive than ever. They talk about various e-commerce sites that almost everybody knows of and mention that there's a lot of other shopping sites where people can go to compare products. Now the article doesn't go into depth on this subject, but I think it's true that more competition is becoming a reality in e-commerce. Just over the last two years there's been quite a jump in the number of competitors in any one market. Add to that the rise of new shopping comparison sites and you'll see a trend toward consumers having more choices than ever.
The one thing that this doesn't take into account is the shopping experience itself and how people feel about doing business with the company. It's important to remember, and this may be the saving grace of all this, that people like to do business with people they like. You can talk about products and price all day long on the Internet, but people still want to do business with people they like and trust. It's a little bit harder to know what that is these days when you never see a person in a purchase. So all is not lost just because things are getting more competitive. In many ways, I think it's good that there's a very healthy competition. It requires that people look at their offering in new ways and make their experience better for the shopping public.
There is no way to know where the future is going in this area. Will it be dominated by only the big boys with a lot of cash someday? Or will there still be opportunities for smaller companies to make inroads into areas that the larger companies don't want to waste time on. I believe with all my heart that there will always be small opportunities out there no matter how competitive things get. It's always been that way for the off-line world of sales and marketing and those rules never change. It doesn't matter what the sales vehicle is, there are certain things that can never be violated and one of them is the human experience in buying or bartering. It goes back thousands of years and it's a part of human nature to do business in a certain way with people we like and trust. So within that framework, it's a matter of looking for ways to better compete in an increasingly competitive world.
