Tell your website story.

Your product or service has a story, tell people about it.

If you're a person like me, you probably have some free time where you like to indulge a hobby or interest. Besides web marketing, I like to look at human creativity and interaction. I'm fascinated with how things were created or developed no matter what it might be. The act of being creative is one of the most unpredictable, non-linear, convoluted processes that we ever take on in our life and probably one of the most satisfying. That's the way God made us. If you don't exercise your creative gifts you will not be everything you were created to be yourself.

My assertion is that most website marketing is done is a factual, technical or sterile environment. And you know what, I've been as guilty as anyone in forgetting the human factors in web marketing. This should never be! It takes more than the basic function of a website and some products offered to make for a good online experience. I suggest you be creative and tell a story, your story and weave it throughout your website marketing campaign. You have a unique story about your business or organization that can be told in a very personal way. Wasn't it creative the way you started, the way it works and where it's going? Don't stifle it as non-business nicety, it's vital to humanize your business, tell people about it! Resist the temptation to simply do things the same old way.

Have you ever checked out a DVD movie and after viewing it take a look at the extra bonus features? The bonus features sometimes have a version of the movie with audio commentary by the director or other people involved in the production. They tell you about certain scenes and how it all fit together. Don't you find it interesting how some of your favorite movies come about? Doesn't it make you more connected to it? Think about it. Wouldn't your website marketing benefit from telling a story that you weave even in bits and pieces throughout your website campaign? It will make you more human and closer to the people that surf in or buy.

Here are a couple of ideas that may help you kick start a theme or story about your company and improve your web marketing campaign.

  • Take a look at your product or service and write a success story that details a solution that solved a problem someone had. Make sure you use a name and personalize it if you or one of your people was directly involved. It should be a feel good online article that people can read.

  • Start a sheet of all the good things your company does for other people. Brainstorm on all the good things that happen to people when they work with your company. Use this as a start for a more human web marketing campaign and the benefits of doing business with you.

  • On your website, tell something about a product you have and relate how it's used in various situations. Don't assume people know all the ways to use your product. If possible, put the story right in with the product or service offering.

  • If you're having a creative block, get started by doing something totally out of character. Do something fun and ridiculous. Break out of the norm of your life. Quit taking things so seriously. It might help you see aspects of your web marketing that you've missed and can change.

Try these on your own or let us know if we can help you tell a story about your website. Now maybe what you offer doesn't have much of a story behind it or it's a service that you feel is very mundane. I don't think there is such a thing, but at the very least, make sure that you offer a certain feel to your website marketing that is inviting and common. As I've stated in other articles, the human touch is very important. People want to hear your story, won't you tell it?
