There are so many products now available online these days that I've often wondered to myself, do these things actually sell online? Some of the products seem like the kind of thing you would need to see in-person to really evaulate it. Take for instance jewelry? Can you really buy a high end piece of jewelry online without first seeing the one you will ultimately buy? Can a picture tell the whole story?
We all know that common retail items sell online because there is an expectation that people know what they're getting before the get it. Brand recognition becomes important when people are shopping online in this case. They believe in brands and the surety of a certain quality and consistency. It's like going to McDonald's almost anywhere in the country, the consistent delivery of the burger means stopping at one in Minneapolis will be the same as Atlanta. So the common brand item sells online.
What about hard-to-find or specialty items? We know those sell online, as on EBay and many other auction sites that help people find a specific item that can't get anywhere else. These are always popular online because usually there is a driving personal need or passion which motivates. These can be an easy sell online if people can find you and your offering.
Probably the hardest thing to sell online are big ticket items like cars, machines of various types but one other type of product that many people miss. The business to business product can be more difficult. There are many traditional avenues for selling product to business or commercial entities. These traditional ways of selling through sales organizations are a trusted way for businesses to get their information and ultimately, products. The businessperson is looking for support on what they buy which goes beyond an anonymous web sale. There can be times when they will buy online, but on products that require more money and support, they are more likely to be bought offline. This doesn't mean that people don't find it online and then shop offline, that can happen a lot and does for many types of sales.
