There's probably never been a time where you can find almost any product or service online. It's truly mind boggling that there is so much to choose from. I often wonder if people who are trying to find one thing get too many choices and then don't know what to do. It happens to me from time to time. I find something I want more information about and I go searching for that and end up with more questions than I had before I started. That's why I think it's important for anyone involved in marketing online to stay consistent.

 

What do I mean by consistent? Well, a website should offer a product or service that is in line with the company expertise. It's important not to stray outside the lines of what you're just plain good at. Should an inkjet cartridge supplier go into presentation graphics? The answer is probably no almost 99% of the time. When offering too many different products or services that are outside what you normally sell, it can get confusing to the visitor. People tend to identify companies as one thing or another. They do that to simplify their world. If you make it hard to understand what you do in one sentence, then you've probably overextended your offering into strange areas. Consistency for marketing online isn't just about what you sell, but how you sell it too.

 

With good marketing online, you must also be consistent in how you sell a product. People don't want the way they buy from you to change drastically. Remember that people in general fight change. If they feel it is a positive experience, then maybe the change won't matter so much. If you start asking for much more information from your customers than you did before it can raise the question or suspicion of why does this website need more information from me now? Website visitors are more aware of privacy concerns more than ever, so any changes you make to your marketing online program should be consistent with how you've treated people in the past.

 

When you select various avenues for creating more traffic for your website, you should also have a consistent message. Your advertising should reflect a lot of the same language used in other areas and that includes your website. An across the board focus will help people identify you in their minds and this will help improve credibility as someone they can trust. That's something that money cannot buy, but can be impressed upon people's thinking over time creating some brand loyalty.
