I love generalized terms. They tell you everything and nothing at the same time. Take for instance words like "global warming" or "canned meat". They say nothing about what specifically it is or does. Of course, everyone knows that there is more to a subject than just the general category description. It's the same way with the term "internet marketing". There's a substantial amount of interest in internet marketing and you'll see all sorts of hype about the subject itself. There are many companies who claim to have some solitary wisdom regarding this form of website promotion. When it gets down to it, there really anything special about the subject until you reach down in the details of what you do and how you do it.

The simple answer to what internet marketing can be is using the internet to create sales or desire for the products or services you sell. When you strip off all the fancy words, mumbo-jumbo, white papers and theories, that's really all it is. It's finding people to sell and selling the people you find, to use an old sales phrase. I always believe that a problem or issue must be distilled down to it's most basic form so it can be addressed without any prejudice. It the same with any type of marketing that you attempt, internet or otherwise.

If you're looking at doing some new promotion online, think about the basics of your website and what you're trying to accomplish. Are you trying to sell something? Are you getting people to sign up for your volunteer organization? Do you need to promote a product for resellers? Whatever the answer to the question, you'll need to focus on that and tailor your offering to reflect the answer. Because there should be one basic function your website should do if it does nothing else. That's your focus! Now you can take that general term of internet marketing and apply some of the strategies to meet the ultimate goal. It may be some form of paid advertising, pay-per-click or an overhaul to achieve better natural search engine rankings.

What exactly are natural search results?

These are the results that the search engine has in their database that were listed based on relevancy and was done automatically through a search engine algorithm. These are based on what the page is about, the links to it and it's popularity. It's not something that can be done overnight! It takes a lot of time and effort to make a website a desirable, relevant place to go. These are in the middle of the search engine results page. Anything that is labeled as a sponsored site was paid for through an ad campaign.

Whatever you decide to do, forget the hype that surrounds this subject. There is no magic way to get a good internet marketing campaign working right. It requires time and effort as well as a clear goal to reach down the road. There really is no difference between traditional sales techniques and online marketing, because it's all sales really. Somehow, sometime, you have to get someone to notice your offering and then act upon it. When you can grasp that concept, then you can properly approach your website promotion and turn it into a winner.
