Google changes and your website.

Google makes changes to their search algorithm, don't fear it.

I always get a kick out of people in the search marketing industry who have an anxiety attack whenever they see their ranking change in Google search results. This happens on a fairly regular basis and many website owners tremble to see where they might end up in the search results. Some people call the algorithm change, a Google Dance, although that term is becoming less popular. All it means is that for some reason, Google has decided to change results to better reflect accurate relevancy. That may be good for some websites and bad for others. But just because this happens doesn't mean you have to have great fear. You should have a plan so that this won't affect your rankings quite so much.

As long as there have been search engines, there have been ways to index the websites that they find to give people searching relevant results. That's all there is to it! So what should website owners be doing instead of fearing the next big change? Here's what it is. Keep developing your website to be a good, credible source of information that people searching can use. When you take this kind of approach, then the sting of reduced search engine results in the next Google Dance won't hurt. Why? Because you're not making your website for search engines, but for people, and it's that kind of information that search engines like. It's oxymoronic. You must provide good, relevant information in order for search engines to rank you highly. It goes against our nature. When confronted with poor search results, we feel the urge to manipulate data to be higher ranked by a search engine. That's not the way it works. These search companies don't employ stupid people doing stupid things. They work hard to make the best search results possible. When you try to fool them, you're only cheating your visitors and yourself.

Now, I'm not saying that a change can have a bad effect on your website, it can. And yes, there are times when it can be a little unnerving. But in the midst of major changes, you should keep your website unchanged so you will understand how or why your search results changed, positive or negative. Many people will fear these changes, but I've worked past that so that any one thing that happens won't have a great effect. That's why you must change your strategy to make your website more appealing, more relevant. If you would like to get more information on how to reduce your search results anxiety, drop me an e-mail. I have some good answers and can help you have a more consistent website presence.
