Traditional newspapers cowering in fear.
With the advent of RSS feeds as a way for people to get their news, many newspapers are starting to feel the pinch. Many of them feel that they need to get in their own version of RSS so that they can retain readers and loyalty. I get a real kick out of some of the quotes where people say that the future is very murky and they don't know what's next. Well, it's about time that mainstream media should get the shakes as well as everybody else regarding what the online world is doing to our culture.
Because of blogging, RSS feeds and the like, there is a new sense that you don't need newspapers to get your news. And I think some of the broadcast media has done a better job at going online like TV stations for instance. Many of them started web sites early on and become a good portal for many local people in their area. There's one here in the Minneapolis area that does a good job of getting news to people and some of the community interest that augment what they do on television. Newspapers have never been that forward in their thinking regarding online ventures. Many newspapers think that people will always want the tangible paper asset, but I don't think that's true anymore. You can save a lot of money by not getting a newspaper. Many times the online news sources give you the news without an editorial bias. I think the whole trend with blogs and RSS is a good trend that will make newspapers be better than they ever were before. It will also be better for people who are readers of new sources.
