SingingFish, the power behind AOL video and audio search.
I recently found an article that talked about AOL search as some kind of hidden gem. And looking at it, I wouldn't say that because it has search engine results that are still drawn from Google. But one thing you did have that I've found to be helpful was their video and audio search. I took a look at it and saw that it was provided for them by SingingFish.com. It's interesting how some of the search companies are putting together the various parts of license software to make their search capabilities greater and more appealing to the searching public. So instead of using the AOL search for finding video or audio, I went right to SingingFish.com and found it to be helpful. I thought it would put it to the test and look for an MP3 that I've been looking for for some time. I wanted to find a Happy Boy song done by the Beat Farmers. And unlike all of the other search engines I tried this one found it. This is the song where a little dog gets run over by a car and its owner puts it in a box in a drawer. And it's things like this that you can't find anywhere else that really make it something worth while.
So I'm glad AOL has a search capability and that they're using good tools to support it. This is just like many of the other upcoming search tools like A9 and more that will be using it as a marketing tool as well. I sure was happy about finding a happy boy song because it's one that has so much meaning for me. I'm going to be playing around with this service a little bit more to see how deep some of the audio and video goes. I'm not saying that I'm going to be going in there to get copyrighted material, far from it. In this case, I needed to find this song as it was not available on Rhapsody or ITunes or even on some of the fan sites for this group. With a beautiful song like that it should be something that the band makes available very easily. Some of the smaller groups should use the Web to disseminate their songs but few take good advantage of it.
I'll be looking for AOL search to improve in other ways and I imagine over time that they'll probably have their own algorithm too. But I don't see any evidence of that right now as they're using Google search results.
