AskJeeves is getting into blogging now.
Not to be outdone or left behind, AskJeeves has purchased BlogLines. They are a blogging site where people can post blogs and it looks like they're going to integrate it into their offering. This is a trend that no one can ignore and it tells you a lot about search engines these days. They like text and they like to see deeper information than is normally available in a web page. Every search engine out there sees the need to cater to blogs and to make those services available. The only problem with AskJeeves is how late they always come to the party. They always seem to be behind and not out front. Usually companies like this are the ones that are innovating because they are smaller and more nimble. But in this case that isn't true. I don't mean to be so hard on them but if I were a betting man I could see that AskJeeves at some point is going to be swallowed by an even bigger fish. Of course, I don't know if that's true, but it seems to me that they do have a good user base and that could be helpful to someone else. As far as innovating goes, no way. And it's not their fault, when you have so much competition and you weren't really first of the party, you're not going to get into people's minds first just by saying you're better. Being first in the mind of the public is not easy and right now that belongs to Google. It's Google that sets the pace and creates the race and as long as that is going on they will be the winner. Not even MSN can touch that with all the assets and money they have behind them.
More and more, companies are going to see the advantages of blogging and search companies like this one will be taking steps to capitalize on that, literally. I like AskJeeves, it's a good search engine and one that I use from time to time, but I also see how they're fighting an uphill battle right now. Good luck AskJeeves!
